Manager Confirms First-Team Debut for New Super Eagles Defender

New Super Eagles defender Benjamin Fredrick is set to return to first-team football, with his club manager Keith Andrews confirming that the Nigerian will be part of the squad for Tuesday’s Carabao Cup clash against Reading.

According to OwnGoalNigeria on Monday, September 14, 2026, Fredrick has fully recovered from the meniscus injury that kept him out for around eight months.

The 21-year-old spent last season on loan at Belgian side FC Dender, but his spell was brought to an early end after he suffered the injury in November.

Fredrick has since completed his rehabilitation and recently returned to competitive action. He has featured twice for the club’s Under-21 side as he works on getting back to full match fitness.

Andrews confirmed that Fredrick will be included in the first-team squad against Reading, meaning he could make his senior debut if selected.

“He hasn’t had a lot of football. We decided not to play him yesterday in the B Team game to make sure he was in the right place to be available [tomorrow],” Andrews said during his pre-match press conference.

The young defender is highly regarded by the club and has already made his mark at international level with Nigeria.

Fredrick has started all six of his senior appearances for the Super Eagles and is viewed as one of the country’s promising young defenders.

He also came through the club’s youth system and was named its best Under-23 player two seasons ago.

A first-team appearance against Reading would represent another major step in Fredrick’s comeback as he looks to put his lengthy injury setback behind him and establish himself at senior level.
