Referee Abandons Estonian Match After Suspected Betting Fraud Alert

An unusual incident has rocked Estonian football after an Esiliiga match between FC Tallinn and Maardu Linnameeskond was abandoned in the 78th minute following concerns over possible betting fraud.

The dramatic incident happened on September 10, 2026, in the second tier of Estonian football. The match had already produced a remarkable turnaround before the referee decided to bring proceedings to an early end.

From 2-1 Down to 4-2 Ahead in Seven Minutes

FC Tallinn initially took the lead through Artjom Dmitrijev in the eighth minute, but Maardu responded before half-time through Manucho.

The same player then struck again immediately after the restart, putting Maardu 2-1 ahead.

What followed was the part of the match that raised serious concerns.

FC Tallinn scored three goals in just seven minutes to completely turn the game around. Mihhail Hansman equalised in the 66th minute before Aleksander Iljin put Tallinn ahead four minutes later.

Kirill Nesterov then made it 4-2 in the 73rd minute.

The rapid sequence of goals, along with other incidents during the spell, prompted concerns about the integrity of the match. Reports also noted that Maardu conceded a penalty during the controversial period.

Referee Stops the Match

Just five minutes after Tallinn’s fourth goal, the match was stopped.

According to the Estonian Football Association, referee Jagnar Jakobson abandoned the game in the 78th minute after information relating to suspected betting fraud was received.

The official match record also confirms that the game was stopped in the 78th minute.

This was not simply a normal refereeing decision. The Estonian Football Association described stopping or abandoning a match because of suspected betting fraud as an exceptional measure used when relevant information about possible manipulation becomes available.

Three Maardu-Linked Individuals Suspended

The controversy has already led to disciplinary action.

The Estonian Football Association announced that three people connected with Maardu Linnameeskond had been temporarily banned from football-related activities while a disciplinary investigation is ongoing.

The allegations being investigated include possible breaches of integrity rules, direct or indirect involvement in betting, arranging the course or result of a match and failing to fulfil reporting obligations.

Importantly, these are allegations under investigation and do not by themselves establish that the match was fixed.

What Happens Next?

The Estonian Football Association will determine the next steps after its investigation. The abandoned match’s final sporting status will also have to be decided by the football authorities.

Estonian football has previously experienced similar incidents. According to the EJL, two matches have previously been abandoned because of suspected betting fraud — one in the top division in 2013 and another in the Esiliiga in 2016. Both were subsequently given new dates.

For now, the FC Tallinn versus Maardu Linnameeskond match remains one of the most unusual stories in European football this week, with the investigation expected to provide more answers about what happened during those extraordinary seven minutes.
