🚨 BREAKING: James RodrĂguez has retired from international football.
The Colombia captain has officially brought an end to his international career at the age of 35, closing one of the most memorable chapters in modern Colombian football.
RodrĂguez announced his decision on September 15, 2026, just weeks after representing Colombia at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His retirement brings an emotional end to a national-team journey that began in 2011 and lasted 15 years.
An Emotional Farewell
RodrĂguez shared the news in an emotional message to Colombian supporters, thanking them for standing by him throughout his career.
He described representing Colombia as one of the greatest honours of his life and reflected on the many memorable moments, victories, disappointments and emotions he experienced while wearing the national-team shirt.
The decision marks the end of an era for a player who became one of the most recognisable faces of Colombian football.
The 2014 World Cup Changed Everything
For many fans around the world, RodrĂguez’s name will forever be associated with the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
The attacking midfielder produced one of the greatest individual tournament performances in Colombian football history, scoring six goals as Colombia reached the quarter-finals for the first time.
He finished as the tournament’s Golden Boot winner, while his stunning volley against Uruguay in the last 16 was later voted the World Cup’s Goal of the Tournament and earned him the FIFA Puskás Award.
His performances turned him into a global superstar and eventually led to a blockbuster move to Real Madrid.
A Lasting Legacy With Colombia
RodrĂguez went on to represent Colombia at the 2018 and 2026 World Cups, while also featuring in four Copa AmĂ©rica tournaments.
He played a particularly important role during Colombia’s run to the 2024 Copa AmĂ©rica final, where they eventually finished runners-up to Argentina.
By the time he announced his retirement, RodrĂguez had earned 131 caps and scored 31 goals for Colombia. FIFA lists him as the country’s all-time leader in appearances and assists, with 43 assists.
His Final World Cup Appearance
RodrĂguez’s final appearance for Colombia came at the 2026 World Cup.
Colombia reached the round of 16 before being eliminated by Switzerland on penalties. That match ultimately became RodrĂguez’s final game in the famous yellow shirt.
He had already surpassed David Ospina to become Colombia’s leading appearance maker during the tournament.
A New Chapter Begins
Interestingly, RodrĂguez’s international retirement comes just days after he returned to Colombian club football.
The 35-year-old recently joined Atlético Nacional on a free transfer, signing a contract that runs until June 30, 2027. It is his first spell playing in Colombia since leaving the country as a teenager.
While his Colombia career is now over, RodrĂguez still has the opportunity to continue playing at club level.
For Colombian supporters, however, his international retirement represents something much bigger.
From the teenage midfielder who made his debut in 2011 to the No. 10 who won the 2014 World Cup Golden Boot and became Colombia’s record appearance holder, James RodrĂguez has left behind a remarkable international legacy.
End of an era. 🇨🇴💛💙❤️
