Thierry Henry Explains Why JJ Gabriel Could Leave Manchester United for Other Clubs

Thierry Henry believes Manchester United youngster JJ Gabriel could be tempted to leave Old Trafford amid reported interest from Barcelona and Real Madrid.

The highly rated academy prospect has reportedly attracted attention from some of Europe’s biggest clubs, with Barcelona said to have been monitoring his development for several years.

Speaking about the situation, Henry suggested that United supporters should not be surprised if Gabriel considers a move, especially when clubs with the reputation of Barcelona and Real Madrid show serious interest.

Henry: ‘What do you expect?’

Henry acknowledged that some Manchester United fans may disagree with his opinion, but insisted that the situation reflects the reality of modern football.

“What do you expect when Barcelona and Real Madrid are interested in him?”

The former Arsenal and France striker explained that even if Gabriel decides to remain at United for now, there would still be a possibility of him leaving in the future.

“Even if JJ Gabriel stays at Manchester United, there is always a possibility that he could leave when the time comes. That is the reality when the biggest clubs in Europe are watching a young player.”

Barcelona’s academy pathway

Barcelona’s reported interest in Gabriel is believed to be linked to the club’s long-standing reputation for developing young talent.

Henry pointed to Lamine Yamal as a recent example of how quickly an academy player can become an important member of Barcelona’s first team.

“Look at how Lamine Yamal has burst onto the scene at Barcelona, along with so many other academy players. They have been brilliant with this trajectory.”

Barcelona’s La Masia academy has produced several world-class players over the years, including Lionel Messi, Xavi, Andrés Iniesta, Sergio Busquets and Carles Puyol.

For Henry, that pathway could be attractive to a young player looking for regular first-team opportunities.

Concerns over Manchester United’s academy system

Henry also questioned whether Manchester United currently have the right structure to bring the best out of their young players.

He argued that the club’s senior team has struggled to deliver consistent performances, while academy prospects have not always been given enough opportunities at the highest level.

“The same cannot be said of Manchester United. They don’t have the best system right now to bring the best out of their academy players.”

He added:

“The senior players aren’t turning up in games, the results are poor, yet the young players aren’t being given enough opportunities at the highest level.”

Henry predicts Gabriel would thrive at Barcelona

The former Barcelona forward went further by suggesting that Gabriel could flourish if he eventually joined the Catalan club.

According to Henry, Barcelona’s style of football and willingness to trust young players could provide the perfect environment for the teenager’s development.

“If JJ Gabriel goes to Barcelona, he will thrive there. I don’t see many other clubs that can give an academy product a pathway to the first team as quickly as Barcelona.”

Henry concluded that Gabriel could benefit from the club’s possession-based football and its tradition of promoting academy players.

“He will thrive there because of the way they play and because they genuinely trust young players.”

United face a major decision

Manchester United will be determined to keep hold of Gabriel, particularly given his potential and the level of interest reportedly surrounding him.

However, Henry’s comments highlight the challenge facing the club. United must convince their most promising young players that they can develop and reach the highest level at Old Trafford.

For Gabriel, the decision will likely depend on several factors, including playing opportunities, the club’s long-term plans and the pathway available to first-team football.

Barcelona and Real Madrid’s interest would represent a major compliment, but Manchester United will hope their young star chooses to continue his development in Manchester. 🔴
