Premier League Panel Backs Gabriel After Chelsea Red-Card Controversy

Arsenal defender Gabriel has been cleared of wrongdoing following an independent review of his controversial challenge on Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez.

The incident took place during Arsenal’s 2-1 victory over Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium on September 6. Gabriel challenged for a loose ball and made contact with Martínez’s head, leading to questions over whether the Arsenal defender should have been sent off.

Referee Chris Kavanagh did not award a foul or show Gabriel a card during the match. VAR official Darren England also reviewed the incident but decided there was not enough evidence to recommend an on-field review.

KMI Panel supports the original decision

The Premier League’s Key Match Incidents Panel has now assessed the challenge and unanimously agreed with the decision made by the match officials.

The panel concluded that several players were competing for the loose ball and that Gabriel’s actions did not reach the threshold for violent conduct or serious foul play.

The KMI Panel is made up of five members, including former players or coaches, as well as representatives from the Premier League and Pro Ref. Its role is to review major refereeing decisions involving incidents such as penalties, red cards and possible VAR interventions.

Rooney had questioned the decision

Although the panel has now backed the officials, the incident had already attracted criticism from some former players and pundits.

Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney previously suggested that Gabriel was fortunate to escape a red card. Rooney argued that Martínez had possession of the ball when the contact occurred.

The controversy was further fuelled by the fact that the Chelsea goalkeeper required medical treatment following the collision.

However, the KMI Panel’s review found that the challenge did not justify a sending-off, confirming that the original decision was correct.

Arsenal maintain perfect league start

The incident was eventually overshadowed by Arsenal’s result. Mikel Arteta’s side recovered from a goal down to defeat Chelsea 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium.

The victory extended Arsenal’s perfect start to the Premier League season, with the Gunners winning all three of their opening league matches.

While supporters and pundits may continue to debate the challenge, the official review has now provided clarity on the decision. According to the KMI Panel, Gabriel’s actions did not warrant a red card.
