Chelsea supporters have renewed calls for the club to consider bringing back former academy player Ethan Ampadu after his impressive performance in Leeds United’s 4-1 Premier League win over Newcastle United.
According to The Chelsea Chronicles on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, Ampadu played an important role in Leeds’ convincing victory, leading some Chelsea fans to question whether the Welsh midfielder could eventually return to Stamford Bridge.
The discussion comes as Chelsea supporters continue to debate the club’s midfield options. Some believe the team could benefit from a more defensively minded midfielder who could partner Moises Caicedo and offer additional protection in front of the back four.
Others feel Ampadu’s defensive ability could help allow Reece James to spend more time in his preferred right-back position. Meanwhile, Romeo Lavia’s recent performances have attracted criticism from sections of the Chelsea fanbase.
Ampadu left Chelsea permanently in 2023 after loan spells with Spezia and Venezia in Italy. He later joined Leeds in a deal worth an initial £7 million.
Since arriving at Elland Road, the 25-year-old has grown into a key player for Daniel Farke’s side. He has also taken on the captaincy, underlining his importance to the team.
His defensive work has been one of his biggest strengths. Ampadu’s tackling, ability to disrupt opposition attacks and leadership have made him an influential figure in Leeds’ midfield.
His display against Newcastle has now brought those qualities back into the spotlight for Chelsea supporters. Some fans praised his performance and suggested that his experience and defensive discipline could provide qualities they feel are missing from the current squad.
However, a return to Stamford Bridge would not be simple. Ampadu signed a new contract with Leeds during the summer, and Chelsea did not include a buyback clause when they sold him in 2023.
The Blues did retain a sell-on percentage in the original agreement, meaning they could still benefit financially if Leeds decide to sell the midfielder in the future.
For now, Ampadu remains an important part of Leeds’ plans. But his latest performance has once again raised questions among Chelsea supporters about whether the former academy graduate could one day make a return to west London.
