Bruno Fernandes Injury Concern Ahead of Sunday Derby

Manchester United could have an injury concern on their hands ahead of Sunday’s Manchester derby, with Bruno Fernandes reportedly seen leaving Old Trafford with a slight limp after Thursday night’s Champions League victory over Sabah.

According to a report by Metro on Friday, September 11, 2026, there are questions over whether the United captain will be fully fit to face Manchester City.

Fernandes scored again in United’s 4-0 win over Sabah and played the entire match despite taking several heavy challenges. While Michael Carrick made a number of changes during the second half, the Portuguese midfielder remained on the pitch until the final whistle.

Mason Mount replaced Youri Tielemans at halftime, while Andrey Santos came on for Kobbie Mainoo after the hour mark. Benjamin Sesko and Bryan Mbeumo were also withdrawn during the game, with both players expected to feature against City.

However, footage recorded outside Old Trafford appeared to show Fernandes walking slowly as he left the stadium. The midfielder still stopped to acknowledge supporters, but his cautious movement has raised concerns about his condition.

The 32-year-old has generally enjoyed a good injury record since joining Manchester United in January 2020. He has missed just five games this season, with three of those absences coming because of a hamstring problem.

United already have other fitness concerns ahead of the derby. Carlos Baleba is dealing with an ankle injury, while Amad Diallo continues to recover from an injury suffered shortly before the start of the campaign.

Baleba is still working his way back after picking up the ankle problem during pre-season with Brighton. His absence leaves Carrick with fewer options in midfield as United prepare for the crucial clash with City.

Luke Shaw is another player whose availability remains uncertain. The left-back missed training on Wednesday and was not included in the squad for Thursday’s Champions League win.

Carrick previously explained that Shaw had experienced some discomfort after coming off with cramp during the draw against Everton. The manager said the club was being cautious and would assess the defender’s condition before deciding whether he could play on Sunday.

With the derby now just days away, United will be hoping Fernandes’ limp was nothing serious and that their captain will be ready to lead the team against Manchester City.
