Thierry Henry has called for severe punishment against Manchester City following reports that the club was found guilty of 114 out of 115 Premier League financial rule charges.
The long-running case took another major turn this week after reports emerged that an independent tribunal had found the majority of the charges proven. Manchester City have maintained that the Premier League process is still ongoing and are expected to appeal the findings.
The verdict has already sparked a huge debate over what punishment would be appropriate if the findings ultimately stand.
For Henry, simply deducting points would not be enough.
Thierry Henry Wants Manchester City Titles Questioned
Speaking about the situation, Henry argued that Manchester City’s Premier League titles during the period covered by the investigation should come under scrutiny if the breaches are ultimately confirmed through the full process.
The former Arsenal and France star believes that if financial breaches provided a competitive advantage, then the consequences should go beyond a points deduction.
Henry’s reported comments have added another major voice to the growing debate surrounding the potential punishment facing City.
He argued that the club’s titles should be stripped, trophies taken away and historical records corrected if the breaches are ultimately established.
Henry Also Raises Possibility of Relegation
Henry also went further by suggesting that relegation should be considered as part of any punishment.
His argument is that the issue should not be viewed simply as a financial matter but as something that could affect the integrity of competition.
“If those breaches gave them an advantage, the titles won during that period have to be questioned,” Henry was reported as saying.
He believes that allowing a club to keep everything it achieved during a period in which serious breaches were established could send the wrong message to other clubs.
Manchester City’s Case Is Not Over Yet
Despite the reports surrounding the tribunal’s findings, Manchester City’s case has not reached its final conclusion.
The Premier League process remains confidential, while City have stated that significant parts of the process are still to be completed. Reports indicate that the club intends to appeal the findings.
That means no final punishment has been announced yet.
Possible sanctions being discussed include a points deduction, a financial penalty and potentially expulsion from the Premier League. The question of whether previous titles could be affected is also part of the wider debate, although there is currently no confirmed decision to strip City of any trophies.
Manchester City Have Won Three Premier League Titles During the Period
The allegations cover a nine-season period from 2009 to 2018. During that period, Manchester City won the Premier League three times.
That fact has made the question of retrospective punishment particularly significant.
If sanctions were eventually applied to past seasons, it could create difficult questions about historical league standings, title records and the clubs that finished behind City during those campaigns.
However, exactly what happens to those records will depend on the eventual sanction and the outcome of the appeal process.
A Debate That Could Continue for Years
The Manchester City case has already taken years to reach this stage, and the appeal process could extend the controversy even further.
For now, the football world is waiting to see what punishment, if any, will ultimately be imposed.
Henry’s comments have nevertheless added fuel to one of the biggest debates surrounding the case: should any punishment focus only on Manchester City’s future, or should it also affect what the club achieved during the period covered by the allegations?
That question is unlikely to disappear anytime soon.
For Manchester City, the immediate focus will be on the next stage of the legal process and the club’s expected appeal.
For everyone else, the biggest question remains: what happens to the trophies and records if the findings are ultimately upheld?
