Roy Keane Sends Strong Message to Manchester United Over Kobbie Mainoo

Roy Keane has warned Manchester United to be careful with how they handle their academy players after another impressive performance from Kobbie Mainoo.

The former United captain was speaking after Mainoo’s display against Sabah, where the young midfielder showed his quality in possession, defended well and produced passes that caught the eye.

For Keane, the performance was another reminder of why United must not give up on their young talents too easily.

Keane: United Nearly Made a Big Mistake With Mainoo

Keane believes Manchester United came close to making a serious mistake with Mainoo last season when a manager reportedly felt the midfielder did not fit his plans.

According to Keane, the club cannot allow one manager’s decision to determine the future of a player who could go on to become a star elsewhere.

“Manchester United need to be very careful with academy players because you cannot allow one manager to decide their future. We almost lost Kobbie Mainoo last season because a manager decided he didn’t fit his plans.”

Keane also pointed to Paul Pogba as an example of what could happen if United allow their own young players to leave and later have to spend huge money bringing them back.

“Imagine if he had left and started producing performances like this somewhere else. United would be sitting here again paying £100m to bring their own player back, just like Pogba.”

The comparison highlights a concern that has followed United for years: the club has produced talented players but has not always managed their development correctly.

Mainoo Continues to Impress

Keane was full of praise for Mainoo’s performance, admitting that the midfielder has reached a level where poor displays have become difficult to remember.

“I honestly struggle to describe Mainoo anymore. His performances have been exceptional. I can’t remember the last time I watched him and thought he had a bad game.”

Mainoo has often been praised for his calmness and ability to keep possession under pressure. However, Keane believes the youngster showed even more against Sabah.

The former midfielder highlighted Mainoo’s passing, defensive work, ball-carrying ability and contribution in attack.

“And today, we saw another side of him. Those passes coming out of nowhere, the ability to defend, carry the ball and create something in attack.”

That all-round quality is what makes Mainoo such an exciting player for Manchester United. He is not simply a midfielder who can keep the ball moving. He can also win possession, carry the ball forward and make things happen in the final third.

‘He Is Already the Present’

Mainoo has frequently been described as one of the future stars of Manchester United, but Keane believes that description no longer goes far enough.

“He’s not just the future of Manchester United anymore. He is already the present.”

That is a strong statement from someone who knows exactly what it takes to play in Manchester United’s midfield.

At just 21 years old, Mainoo is still developing, but his performances have already made him an important part of the club’s plans. His ability to remain composed in difficult situations and contribute in different areas of the pitch has made him one of the most exciting academy graduates to emerge from Old Trafford in recent years.

Keane Names the Type of Midfielder Mainoo Needs

Keane also suggested that Mainoo could become even more dangerous if United placed the right midfielder alongside him.

He mentioned Leicester City’s Youri Tielemans and Brighton’s Carlos Baleba as examples of players who could complement Mainoo’s qualities.

“Put someone like Tielemans or Baleba beside him and, honestly, I think opponents will start worrying before the game even begins. This boy is special.”

The idea is simple: Mainoo’s technical ability and intelligence could become even more effective if he has a strong partner who can help with defensive duties, physical battles and ball progression.

A balanced midfield could give Mainoo more freedom to influence games while also helping United control matches against stronger opponents.

Manchester United Must Get Mainoo’s Development Right

Keane’s comments are not just praise for one performance. They are also a warning to Manchester United.

The club has a long history of producing academy players, from the Busby Babes to the Class of ’92 and the more recent graduates who have broken into the first team.

But developing young talent requires patience, proper planning and the right environment. A player who does not immediately fit one manager’s system may still become a key figure under another.

Mainoo’s progress is a reminder that young players should not be judged too quickly.

If he continues performing at this level, Manchester United may have one of the most important midfielders of their next generation already in their squad.

And as Roy Keane made clear, the club must make sure it does not lose him before he reaches his full potential.

What do you think? Is Kobbie Mainoo already Manchester United’s present, or does he still need more time to become a complete midfielder?
